The Black Diamond Viper is an all-round performance ice axe that is sleek, light and balanced, the perfect daily driver for ice and alpine climbing.

The overhauled model now has a new hydro-formed shaped shaft to reduce weight whilst maintaining good lateral stiffness (and strength!). The head unit has also been significantly pared down, again to reduce weight and bulk and the upper grip rest is moveable, and has clearly borrowed the excellent 'Flicklock' design from BD's trekking poles. The rest can now be moved higher or lower up the shaft to alter the secondary grip position depending on the user's preference.

As an all-round ice axe the Viper Tool is hard to beat. It has loads of clearance and a great swing for pure ice routes, whilst still being robust enough for Scottish mixed. It now comes fitted with the T-rated Titan pick as standard, which is definitely a good thing for UK users!

NB: Due to the re-designed head unit this tool does not accept the adze/ hammer units from previous Black Diamond tools. The pick fitting is however the same and these are transferable.
